International humanities conference slated for April 24-25

“Science, Technology, and the Humanities: A New Synthesis” brings together experts from across US and the world

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The College of Arts & Letters at Stevens Institute of Technology will host a two-day conference April 24 and 25 to explore how the humanities are being affected by new science and technology.

Titled “Science, Technology, and the Humanities: A New Synthesis,” the conference will be held from 12 noon to 5 p.m. on Friday, April 24 (registration is in the atrium of the Babbio Building) and 8 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday, April 25 (registration is in the Howe Center lobby).

Also on April 24, there will be a dinner from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Bissinger Room of the Howe Center (4 th floor). Professor Trevor Pinch of Cornell University will discuss “The Moog Synthesizer.”

On April 25, there will be a luncheon from noon to 2 p.m., also in the Bissinger Room. The speaker will be Professor Karen Barad, professor of feminist studies, the history of consciousness, and philosophy at UC Santa Cruz. She will discuss “The Entanglement of Matter and Meaning.”

Each day will host multiple sessions, such as “Physics and Science Fiction,” “Science and the Humanities from the Perspective of Late Nineteenth Century,” “Humanist Science,” and “The Sewing Needle: Technology Piercing the Science/Art Divide.”
