New Jersey's 2008 Annual State of the Shore report, May 22

Stevens Professor Jon Miller, NJMSC/NJ to present sixth annual report in Sandy Hook

HOBOKEN , N.J. ― On Thursday May 22, 2008, Dr. Jon Miller of Stevens Institute of Technology and the Coastal Process Specialist for the NJMSC/NJ Sea Grant Program will present the 6 th annual State of the Shore report on the condition state of NJ beaches, as we head into the peak Jersey Shore tourism season. Speakers will include NJDEP Commissioner Lisa Jackson, Secretary of Agriculture Charles Kuperus, Dr. Michael P. Weinstein, President of the New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium, and Nancy Byrne, Executive Director of NJ Travel and Tourism.

The 2008 NJ: The State of the Shore Media Event will offer two additional news breaking announcements: the winners of the 2008 NJ Top Ten Beaches Survey and the first two recipients of the Stew Tweed Fisheries and Aquaculture Scholarships.

Members of the media will have an opportunity to interview the speakers, beach survey award winners, and scholarship recipients. It will also provide the media and guests with an opportunity to network with develop future sources for information about specific marine and coastal topics.

The press event, sponsored by the New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium and Stevens Institute of Technology, will take place on the beach at The Sea Gull’s Nest, Parking Area D at Sandy Hook, N.J. Copies of the NJMSC Annual 2008 State of the Shore Report will be available as well as coastal press kits containing publications and resource materials developed specifically for the event.

Directions to The Sea Gull’s Nest

Parking Lot Area D Sandy Hook , NJ

From New York (traveling South):

Take the NJ Turnpike to Exit 11 (shore points) and then take NJ Parkway South to Exit 117 (follow signs for Sandy Hook ).

Bear left to Route 36 (Do NOT take Route 35!)

Stay on 36 for 15 miles (about 25 minutes). You will see the Ocean and a bridge ( Highlands Bridge ). As you go over the Highlands bridge bear right and follow brown/gold sign onto Sandy Hook .

After you pass thru entrance toll plaza, continue two miles to Area D: It is the third parking lot on your right after you enter the park. It is a large parking lot with a large two-story structure. Sea Gull’s Nest is atop the two-story structure.

Traveling North on Garden State Parkway (coming from South of Exit 105 on Parkway):

Take Parkway North to Exit 105 (Eatontown). Take Route 36 East for five miles to Ocean Blvd.

(1 Block West of the Ocean) Turn left (north) on Ocean Blvd. and continue for 10 miles. (You will pass a bridge in Sea Bright.) As you near second bridge in Highlands , bear right and follow brown/gold sign onto Sandy Hook . (Do not take EITHER of the bridges, they are just landmarks for directions.) After you pass entrance toll plaza, continue two miles to Area D: It is the third parking lot on your right after you enter the park. It is a large parking lot with a large two-story structure. Sea Gull’s Nest is atop the two-story structure.

From Points West of the Ocean

Take Route 18 South and exit at Eatontown/Route 36. Follow directions above under “B”.

OR

Take Route 520 East all the way thru Rumson and over the Sea Bright/Rumson Bridge.

After Bridge, turn left onto Ocean Avenue and head north for two miles. At you near bridge in Highlands , bear right and follow brown/gold sign onto Sandy Hook .

After you pass entrance toll plaza, continue two miles to Area D: It is the third parking lot on your right after you enter the park. It is a large parking lot with a large two-story structure.
