HOBOKEN , N.J. ― John Horgan , Director of the Center for Science Writings at Stevens Institute of Technology, will be the US Consultant Editor for a new title being launched by the BBC into the American magazine market. BBC Knowledge Magazine is set to hit American newsstands in August this year and will be edited by Sally Palmer, former Deputy Editor of the BBC magazine Focus, who will work closely with Horgan in his newly appointed position.
Horgan is an award-winning science journalist whose articles have been selected for The Best American Science and Nature Writing in 2005, 2006 and 2007 . A former senior writer at Scientific American, he has also written for publications including The New York Times, Time, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times , and New Scientist. His books include The End of Science, a bestseller, and Rational Mysticism.
BBC Knowledge Magazine will be aimed at ‘the curious mind’ and offer informative, entertaining features on science, history and nature. The 100-page full-color glossy magazine will be published six times a year by BBC Worldwide. It will draw on the publisher’s existing portfolio of quality magazines including the award-winning popular titles Focus, BBC History Magazine , and BBC Wildlife Magazine.
Burton Cromer, executive vice president, Consumer Products, BBC Worldwide Americas, commented: “The BBC’s reputation for entertaining, educating and informing is second to none among American audiences. BBC Knowledge Magazine is sure to be a welcome addition for all fans of non-fiction programming.” Horgan’s broad perspective will also be an excellent addition to the magazine. This is seen by the diversity of his awards, including the 2005 Templeton-Cambridge Journalism Fellowship in Science and Religion; the American Psychiatric Association Certificate of Commendation for Outstanding Reporting on Psychiatric Issues (1997); the Science Journalism Award of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1992 and 1994); and the National Association of Science Writers Science-in-Society Award (1993).
Andy Benham, publishing director of BBC Magazines Bristol, said: “The magazine has been positioned to capitalize on the strength of the BBC’s brand in the US. While the content will feed American interests, the British-ness and BBC-ness of the magazine are seen as being key assets, offering consumers a fresh alternative to what is currently on the market.”
BBC Knowledge Magazine will be launched with a series of direct mail campaigns carried out by Evergreen Marketing, as well as being available on the US newsstand. Printed and distributed in America, issue one will go on sale in August priced $5.99 on the newsstand and $29.95 for an annual subscription.
